I was a lead artist and community engagement researcher for this oral storytelling project. I delivered training to community workers on interviewing styles and conducted interviews and recordings with young people, migrant groups and older Cockney residents, contributing to The London Borough of Newham's community archives and heritage preservation in collaboration with artists, UCL academics, BBC partners, community organisations, all with support from the National Heritage Lottery Fund.
Voices of East Bank captures a snapshot of the languages, dialects and stories of East London ’s diverse heritage and communities. Our project is a testament to the power of storytelling, community and cultural diversity. Through oral history recordings, immersive workshops and community-led projects, we acknowledged and created a living legacy archive of stories about themes of migration, family, belonging, heritage, and more. Our mission was to capture and honour these invaluable voices among the diverse communities of East London for generations to come.
